Funny enough, as I continue to read memoir novels centered around Tuscany (my favorite place in the world ), I just last night ordered a book that gives a true account of two people's investigation into the serial murders surrounding the infamous "Monster of Florence"
Now, what should I say about that book, and not spoil something from Hannibal?
I'm not quite sure - did you watched it?
Actually, sort of indirectly, I did see that the show draws a very strong link between Hannibal and the Monster. I won't say it here to avoid spoiling it for anyone else, but let's just say it's an even stronger link than that of Harris' original novel + film adaptation that also deals with the same killer
But otherwise, no, I haven't yet seen the show or actually any of the film adaptation of Harris' original novels (apart from seeing part of "Silence of the Lambs")
As a hard core fan of Penny Dreadful, I think you should really check it out. It has very strong similarity with PD, with its own uniqueness. Can't recommend it enough.
